Course Description
Fundraising for human rights is particularly challenging, especially for longer-term solutions beyond humanitarian emergencies, as the work is complex, uncomfortable and emotionally challenging. Governments sometimes feel threatened by human rights organisations that hold them accountable for their human rights record, and sometimes choose to support them to further political goals. Aid agencies sometimes steer clear of 'rights-based' work and advocacy for fear of losing funding or being perceived as political.
Therefore, it is a matter of carefully tapping the topic and the interested stakeholder groups and developing a balanced and appropriate fundraising strategy. It is important to address the donors who are open and accessible and to address existing as well as synergetic networks. Using the right tools and building credible, trustworthy and effective relationships is essential. For the fundraisers themselves, it is becoming increasingly important to use their strengths and resources efficiently.
